Your puppy needs to be fully vaccinated, before attending class. What does this mean?

Your puppy needs to be fully vaccinated, before attending class. What does this mean?

I am not going to go into the pros & cons of vaccinating your dog and what it entails, as there is plenty of information out there (do your research) and if you are not sure about something, ask your vet.

I train dogs in the Ashhurst Domain and other public areas, the Domain for example, is open to the public 24/7 as are many other parks and reserves. It is also a high traffic area, meaning people, dogs, (vaccinated or not) vehicles etc, can come and go as they please.

In other words it is not a controlled environment. So the risk, of your, not fully vaccinated puppy contracting something, is greater.

If you do decide to take your puppy out, it may or may not contract something but that is the risk you take and the choice, you make.

What does fully vaccinated mean? it means by the time your puppy reaches 14 – 16 weeks of age, it should have had, all its shots and be fully vaccinated. Of course, as with anything, there are exceptions.

Now I hear you say, what about socialising, or my puppy is doing this and that, what do I do?

Well if you know someone who has a fully vaccinated dog and the dog, is mellow and chilled, you could introduce your puppy to him/her OR you could attend a puppy pre-school, where you will find puppies of similar ages, up to 4 months.

Puppy pre-schools are often run by your local vet but look around and see what is available in your area.  These classes are held in a “controlled environment” and the puppies your puppy will meet, will be at various stages, on their vaccination schedule.

I hope the above has helped clear up any confusion some people may have had, regarding the term “Fully Vaccinated” and what it means.  Many obedience classes, boarding kennels and the like, require dogs to be fully vaccinated.

Are puppy classes enough?  There are no quick fixes when it comes to training your dog

Going away over the Christmas Holidays? Now is the time to start thinking about the needs of your dog. Boarding Kennel Stress in Dogs: Things owners need to know!

Going away over the Christmas Holidays? Now is the time to start thinking about the needs of your dog. Boarding Kennel Stress in Dogs: Things owners need to know!

With Christmas just a few months away, many people will be taking a holiday break and maybe going away. Now is the time to start thinking about your pets and who is going to look after them, if they can’t go with you. Dogs can and do get stressed, so if you are planning to leave your pets in a boarding facility, now is the time, to start looking around.

If your pets have never been boarded before, day stays and day/night stays are recommended and should really, be started now. Boarding kennel stress is real! Dogs become stressed the same as you and I and putting your dog into a boarding kennels, can be very stressful for them.

Imagine taking a young child to a strange place and leaving it with people it doesn’t know. The child will more often than not, become distressed and upset. The same thing, can and does happen to dogs.

I hope the enclosed link: Titled “Boarding Kennel Stress in Dogs: Things owners need to know!” will help and inform dog owners, so everyone including your pets, will have a stress free holiday.

Puppy Buying Tips: what prospective owners should know

I run monthly dog training classes throughout the year, times and dates can be found on this blog.

I first posted this article in June 2014 but I thought I would repost it again because many people look at buying a puppy at this time of the year.

Are you are thinking about getting a new puppy? A puppy can be a joy to have around but also, a lot of hard work. And yes they all look “cute” when they are young but they do grow up.

So do some research, decide which breed is best suited for your family and lifestyle. There’s no point choosing an active breed of dog, that needs a lot of exercise, if you are not that way inclined.

Visit dog shows, the SPCA and other animal shelters, read books, contact the N.Z. Kennel Club (they can supply you with specific breed information and breed club contacts.). Be prepared for the costs associated with dog ownership, such as Vet bills, Dog registration, Microchipping, Grooming, Food & Training, just to name a few.

Lastly, some words of advice, “Let the buyer beware”, if you buy a puppy, the 1st thing you should do, is take it to your local vet and ask them to do a health check. This should be done within a couple of days of you bringing your new puppy home. If your puppy fails its health check, ask your vet to write you a report. Then inform the breeder, pet shop etc, as you maybe entitled to an exchange or refund.

Also make sure when you pay for your puppy you get a receipt, too many people just exchange cash/cheque etc and have no prove of purchase.

Boarding Kennel Stress: Tips for boarding an anxious/nervy dog

Boarding Kennel Stress: Tips for boarding an anxious/nervy dog

Tips for anxious/nervy dogs

So you have an anxious/nervy dog who needs to go into a dog boarding facility, what do you do?

Leave it to the last minute and expect your dog to be ok. Yes well, you can do that. It still suprises me how many owners do, even though, they know their dog displays this behaviour.

Staying in a boarding kennels can be stressful for any dog but even more so for dog who is anxious and nervy. The wellbeing of your dog should be your main concern, so in the case of anxious, nervy dogs, dogs who need more space or dogs who have separation issues, a few visits/stays maybe required. As they need more time to adjust. Their experiences have to be good ones, depending on the dog.

Going away, want to board your dog, make sure your dogs vaccinations are up to date

Bit of a whinge, I am still suprised by how many people ring me and ask if they can board their dog at a moments notice and the vaccinations are not upto date. Some are taken aback by the fact I won’t take their dogs. They don’t seem to think there’s anything wrong with boarding an unvaccinated dog. So after I explain why, some say, “well I will go and get it done today”  then I tell them sorry, vaccinations have to be done 10 days prior to boarding. ( all this info is on my website) So that leaves them having to run around and make alternative last minute arrangements. There’s alot to be said about being organised.
