Dog friendly Cafe’s in the Manawatu area, North Island, New Zealand
I thought I would start a page on dog friendly cafe’s in the Manawatu region especially now summer is nearly here. it is great to get out and about with your canine friend, even better if there is a dog friendly café, where you can stop in and have a coffee and a bite to eat. Great way of socializing, for you and your dog.
As with most dog friendly cafe’s they cater for everyone not just dog owners. So manners are a must, dogs must be kept on a leash and under control, at all times and be able to sit calmly next to you. Jumping on tables or people, being aggressive to people or other dogs, as well as excessive barking, are not acceptable behaviours. They can cause major problems for other café patrons and the café owners.
So be considerate and responsible, remember its up to you to protect your dog from other dogs and people and monitor your dogs behaviour because you are legally liable, if your dog harasses, harms, intimidates or causes a public nuisance etc to anyone or another dog.
If you have never taken your dog to a café before and you are unsure how it will react in that environment. Please contact me as I run a class on Café Manners for Dogs Owners.
My first Cafe to review is the “Wetlands Cafe” situated in the Ashhurst Domain, Ashhurst. (so named because the wetlands lie below the domain and can be viewed from the café)
This is a great café, the owners Lori & Craig really make you feel welcome. It is a very relaxing place, nestled in a park-like, natural bush setting,
Te Apiti wind farm can also be viewed from the Cafe. The Cafe is open 5 days Thursday to Monday, closed Tuesday & Wednesday.
They offer a variety of light meals and snacks as well as hot and cold beverages, indoor and outdoor seating is also available.
For your Canine Friend, complementary dog biscuits are available and freshly filled dog water bowls are placed at every outdoor table so while you are having a coffee and a bite to eat, your dog will not feel left out. Hope you find your way out there soon, you won’t be disappointed.
The Bridge Café is set in peaceful surroundings, with great views of the surrounding countryside, dogs are allowed to sit outside with their owners. There is a short bush walk you can do from the café down to the playground at Balance and back to the café. The Café is open 7 days a week.
Also if you have the time, the Woodville Ferry Reserve is a great place to go and visit with your dog. Just drive back over the Balance bridge and turn left. Again, like all public places, the Dog Control Act still applies, dogs must be kept under control at all times. As the reserve is also a camping ground.
